Rebecca Berkley, Chorus Director

Slough Philharmonic is delighted to introduce Rebecca who became the new Chorus Director in September this year.

Rebecca studied music at the University of Durham, Historical Musicology at King’s College, London and she has a Ph.D. from the University of Huddersfield.

She is a conductor, teacher and vocal animateur – which, as she says, is a fancy way of saying her job is to chivvy people into singing. Rebecca works for Berkshire Maestros, the Berkshire Young Musicians’ Trust, and is based at the Newbury Music Centre. She runs a number of youth choirs and adult community choirs from the Newbury Music Centre, and undertakes voice projects in schools around West Berkshire and Reading. She is also the Music Director of Kennet Opera, a community opera group in Newbury.

Rebecca has always been very keen on community music making. She also works for Sing for Pleasure, the national singing charity, which seeks to encourage the widest possible range of people to discover the joys of choral singing. In addition, she is also keen on training singers to develop their skills in singing, and ran a course called Musicianship for Singers in Newbury in September this year. This was a course to teach amateur singers to sight sing.

She sings with En Coro, a semi professional choir and plays percussion, piano and flute. She has also found time to write a number of books on the subject of singing and training choirs.  She believes that anyone can be taught to sing!
